Top 8 Early Childhood Games for Game Boy

From D. S. Cohen, for About.com

EC – Early Childhood games are intended for the youngest of gamers, starting at ages 3 and older. Simple, yet designed to entertain and educate, also known as Edutainment; EC games have non-violent content, only the lightest of conflict, fun yet simple gamesplay and characters children can relate to.

Although many industry pros consider the Game Boy as a system for kids, it’s shocking how few Early Childhood games are designed for it. Since the original Game Boy Classic, the ESRB has only assigned the EC rating to just seven games for the various Game Boy systems. So then why are their eight titles on the list? Because there is one game (Disney's Little Einsteins) that your guide feels was misrated with an E for Everyone, when it really should have been given an EC.

Parents Tips: The most important thing to remember is that these games aren’t designed to stick in front of your kid to keep them occupied while you take a nap. Most are filled with text that you’ll need to walk them through, and you’ll need to be on hand to help work out the basics when they get started. Learning is hands on activity and the Game Boy can be used as a tool in learning, but nothing can replace you, the parent, as the strongest and most educational influence of all.
