Game Boy at E3 2006 - Day 1
Did Nintendo snub Game Boy?
It's the first day of E3 and the astonishing sites, the booming sounds and the unfortunate smells are in the air. With baited breath gaming press, industry pros and guys who snuck in wait outside for the expo doors to open, revealing the electronic nirvana inside. This is a banner year at the world's largest interactive software tradeshow with Nintendo and Sony revealing the much anticipated secrets behind their respective systems, but let's not forget about the Game Boy Advance…because it sure looks like Nintendo has.
In the twelve year history of Nintendo's press conference at E3 this is the first time the Game Boy was completely omitted. The majority of the event was dedicated to the new Wii, which totally blew the audience away, and the remaining time was set aside to discuss the future of the Nintendo DS. Over the past year Nintendo has been poo-pooing rumors that they will soon stop supporting the best selling game system franchise in history, but the exclusion form the press even leaves over 70 Million Game Boy Advance owners asking, "Has Nintendo abandoned their most popular system ever?" We'll just have to wait for tomorrow when I am scheduled to meet with a Nintendo rep to discuss where the company stands on the GBA.
Lucky for us the Game Boy Advance is still alive and well at the rest of E3 with publishers across the gambit of gaming unveiling their upcoming titles. With movie licenses, puzzle games, new RPGs, many family titles and a few classics ports we won't run out of content any time soon.
Over the next two days of the show and a few days after I will post my conversation with Nintendo over the future of the Game Boy Advance, previews of the upcoming titles, interviews with GBA developers and publishers, an overview of the show and all the excitement and fun that is E3.
